Participants are prepared in parliamentary etiquette and decorum, the role of MPs, branches of government, motion drafting, and public speaking.

Structure

Junior and Senior Tracks

The public programme shows separate junior and senior category sittings, giving multiple age groups chamber-level experience.

Programme Overview

A visible route from youth debate to chamber participation

Parliament’s public programme shows Youth Parliament as more than a one-day event. It combines selection, preparation, structured debate, and live sittings in the Chamber of the Public Buildings. This page frames that route in practical terms so students, parents, teachers, youth groups, and organisers can understand what the pathway currently looks like.

  • By 2025, the programme had reached its 10th annual edition.
  • The 2025 public schedule listed an official opening on 12 August 2025, followed by junior and senior sittings on 14 and 15 August 2025.
  • Parliament’s 2022 launch material explicitly described the Speaker’s Annual Youth Debating Competition as a feeder into Youth Parliament participation.
10th Annual The official Parliament schedule lists the 10th Annual Youth Parliament in August 2025, showing that the programme has developed into a recurring national activity.
12 Aug 2025 Official opening listed on the Parliament sittings page as the formal start of the 2025 programme.
14–15 Aug Junior and senior category sittings were publicly listed across two sitting days in 2025.

How It Works

The pathway in four stages

01

Debate and selection

Young participants begin through organised debating and public speaking opportunities, with the Speaker’s competition serving as the visible pipeline into Youth Parliament.

02

Training and rehearsal

Parliament’s launch notes identify preparation in etiquette, decorum, parliamentary roles, branches of government, and the art of public speaking.

03

Motion development

Participants work with topics and motion drafting, building the discipline needed to research, frame arguments, and debate matters affecting society.

04

Live chamber sitting

Junior and senior category sittings bring the process into the Chamber, where participants apply procedure, speaking order, and debate under structured conditions.

Public Programme Markers

Current official signals from Parliament’s published material

The Parliament of Guyana’s current public pages provide a practical outline of what young participants can expect from the programme and how it is staged across the calendar.

Official opening

The sittings schedule lists the official opening of the 10th Annual Youth Parliament on 12 August 2025.

Category sittings

The same schedule lists separate junior and senior sittings on 14 and 15 August 2025, giving a clear picture of the chamber phase.

Debate as feeder

Parliament’s 2022 launch article says the Speaker’s Annual Youth Debating Competition was created as a feeder into Youth Parliament participation.

What Participants Build

The programme develops more than chamber familiarity

The training themes published by Parliament point to a broader purpose: helping young people understand democratic institutions, speak with confidence, work through motions, and participate in national conversation with discipline and respect for process.

  • Parliamentary etiquette and decorum
  • Understanding the role of Members of Parliament
  • Branches of government and parliamentary procedure
  • Motion drafting and issue framing
  • Public speaking, research, and argument development
