A public life shaped by reform, governance, and national service

Manzoor Nadir is a Guyanese economist and senior parliamentarian whose career has centered on institution-building across Parliament, commerce, labour, youth development, and international parliamentary diplomacy. Born in Albouystown, Georgetown, he rose from modest beginnings to serve as a six-term Member of Parliament, two-term Cabinet Minister, and Speaker of the National Assembly.

Nadir first entered national electoral politics in 1980 through The United Force, later becoming its leader in 1991. He was elected to Parliament in 1992 and re-elected in 1997, 2001, 2006, and 2011. Over the course of his parliamentary career, he served across opposition and government, including a decade in Cabinet as Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce from 2001 to 2006 and Minister of Labour from 2006 to 2011.

As Speaker of the National Assembly, Nadir presides over parliamentary procedure, maintains order in debate, and supports the institutional work of the House. He served as Speaker of the 12th Parliament from 2020 to 2025 and began a second term as Speaker of the 13th Parliament in November 2025.

Nadir earned a Master’s Degree in Economics from the University of Manchester, supported by a scholarship from the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Germany. He also earned a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta, where his profile notes that he worked as a janitor in Edmonton while putting himself through undergraduate studies.

His public life began before national office.
