Straight from the Speaker · 2026
Parliamentary recess, explained.
A planned pause in regular sittings that gives Members and parliamentary staff time to attend to public matters, refresh operations, and prepare for the next period of national business.
The 2026 message
What is happening now?
On 10 August 2026, the National Assembly of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana entered its annual recess. Regular sittings are scheduled to resume on 10 October 2026.
Members of Parliament take a break from committee meetings and Assembly sittings. Staff who serve the committees and the National Assembly also have an opportunity to take leave.
During the break, the Clerk and staff can focus on maintenance, equipment, office upgrades, and preparations for the next sitting period.
More than a calendar gap
What the recess makes possible
The Assembly is not sitting in its regular programme, but the wider institution is still preparing for the work of Parliament and the people it serves.
Members reset
Members have time away from committee meetings and sittings to attend to public matters and private responsibilities.
Staff recharge
Staff who support committees and the National Assembly receive an opportunity to take leave during the planned interval.
Parliament prepares
The Clerk and staff can maintain facilities and equipment, upgrade offices, and ready the institution for resumption.
The annual pathway
From established rule to return
Guyana’s recess has a defined place in the parliamentary calendar. Follow the route from its creation to the next sitting period.
The rule is established
The Standing Orders are amended to provide for an annual recess between 10 August and 10 October.
Regular sittings pause
The annual recess begins and the Assembly moves out of its regular sitting programme.
People and places prepare
Members and staff attend to public matters, leave, maintenance, upgrades, and operational readiness.
The work resumes
The Assembly is scheduled to return to sittings, committee work, legislative business, and accountability.
“No sitting of the National Assembly shall be held from 10th August to 10th October in any year, unless there are special reasons for doing so.”
Standing Order on recess
A useful distinction
Recess is not the same as a permanent stop.
A recess is a prolonged adjournment in the parliamentary calendar. It is different from prorogation, which terminates a session. The official procedure manual also notes that the Speaker may call the Assembly together earlier when the public interest requires it.
